Centre Launches National Mission on Agri-Tech Innovation

The Government of India has launched the National Mission on Agri-Tech Innovation to promote the adoption of advanced technologies in agriculture, including AI-based crop advisory systems, drone monitoring, and precision irrigation solutions. The mission aims to modernize farming practices, improve productivity, and enhance resilience against climate variability.

A key component of the mission is the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven crop advisory platforms. These systems will provide real-time recommendations to farmers on sowing, nutrient management, pest control, and harvesting, based on weather data, soil health parameters, and satellite imagery. This data-driven approach is expected to reduce input costs and increase yields.

The mission also promotes the use of drones for crop monitoring, pesticide spraying, and land mapping, enabling efficient resource use and early detection of crop stress. Drone technology can significantly reduce manual labor, ensure targeted application of agrochemicals, and improve overall farm management.

Another focus area is precision irrigation systems, such as drip and sprinkler technologies integrated with IoT sensors. These systems help optimize water use, which is critical in water-stressed regions, and contribute to sustainable resource management.

The mission provides financial incentives, incubation support, and technical assistance to agri-tech startups and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). By encouraging collaboration between research institutions, private innovators, and farmer collectives, the initiative seeks to create a robust agri-tech ecosystem. Skill development programs and digital literacy training will ensure farmers can effectively adopt new technologies.

The initiative aligns with broader objectives such as Doubling Farmers’ Income, Digital India, and climate-resilient agriculture under national and global sustainability commitments.

Significance

The National Agri-Tech Innovation Mission enhances agricultural productivity, promotes climate resilience, and supports income diversification for farmers. By integrating advanced technologies into traditional farming, it strengthens sustainable agriculture and drives innovation-led rural transformation.
