DRDO Tests Indigenous Ballistic Missile Defence System Upgrade

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested an upgraded Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) interceptor, capable of neutralizing high-altitude ballistic missile threats. The test validates advancements in tracking systems, guidance technology, and interceptor precision, reinforcing India’s layered missile defence shield.

The upgraded interceptor is designed to engage and destroy incoming ballistic missiles in the exo-atmospheric or high endo-atmospheric phase, thereby enhancing interception range and response time. The system integrates advanced radar networks, real-time data processing, and improved kill-vehicle accuracy to ensure effective threat neutralization.

India’s BMD programme follows a two-tier architecture, consisting of:

  • Prithvi Air Defence (PAD)/exo-atmospheric interceptors for high-altitude threats.
  • Advanced Air Defence (AAD)/endo-atmospheric interceptors for lower-altitude engagements.

The recent upgrade enhances the system’s ability to counter evolving threats, including long-range ballistic missiles and complex trajectories. It also strengthens integration with existing air defence systems, contributing to a robust, multi-layered national security framework.

The development reflects progress under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting indigenous design and manufacturing of advanced defence technologies. It reduces reliance on foreign systems while building domestic capabilities in missile guidance, propulsion, radar technology, and command-and-control systems.

Strategically, a strengthened BMD capability enhances deterrence posture, providing a defensive shield against potential missile attacks and contributing to strategic stability in the region.

Significance

The successful test of the upgraded BMD interceptor enhances India’s national security, strengthens its strategic deterrence capability, and reinforces indigenous defence preparedness against high-altitude ballistic missile threats.
