Commencement of Indigenous Chip Manufacturing Under India Semiconductor Mission

India has achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of pilot production at its first indigenous semiconductor fabrication (fab) unit under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The facility marks a major step toward establishing a domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, focusing on strategic, industrial, and critical infrastructure applications.
The fabrication unit is expected to produce semiconductor chips for use in sectors such as defence electronics, telecommunications, automotive systems, power electronics, and industrial automation. While initial production is at a pilot scale, the development validates India’s capability in wafer fabrication, process technology, and cleanroom operations—areas that require high capital investment and technical expertise.

The India Semiconductor Mission aims to provide financial incentives, infrastructure support, and policy facilitation to attract global and domestic players in chip manufacturing, design, packaging, and testing. The launch of pilot production demonstrates progress in building an end-to-end semiconductor value chain, including fabrication, assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP).
Semiconductors are critical components in modern technologies such as smartphones, electric vehicles, 5G equipment, AI systems, and space applications. The global chip shortage during recent years highlighted the strategic vulnerabilities associated with overdependence on a few manufacturing hubs. India’s entry into fabrication strengthens its resilience against supply chain disruptions.
The initiative aligns with broader programs such as Make in India, Digital India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to position India as a global electronics manufacturing hub. Skill development programs, research collaborations, and partnerships with global technology firms are expected to further accelerate ecosystem growth.
Significance
The commencement of indigenous semiconductor fabrication reduces import dependence, enhances supply chain security, and strengthens India’s technological sovereignty. It marks a strategic step toward self-reliance in critical technologies and boosts India’s competitiveness in the global semiconductor landscape.
