Promoting Inclusive Innovation and Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities

The Government of India has launched a National Mission on Assistive Technologies aimed at promoting the development, manufacturing, and deployment of indigenous assistive devices and digital solutions for persons with disabilities. The mission seeks to enhance affordability, accessibility, and availability of assistive technologies, thereby strengthening inclusion and social justice.
Assistive technologies—such as mobility aids, hearing and visual support devices, communication tools, and adaptive digital platforms—play a critical role in enabling persons with disabilities to participate fully in education, employment, and social life. However, high costs, limited domestic production, and uneven access have restricted their reach. The mission addresses these gaps by encouraging indigenous innovation and domestic manufacturing, in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

A key focus of the mission is ensuring affordability and universal access. By supporting research and development, start-ups, and MSMEs, the government aims to reduce dependence on imported devices and bring down costs. The mission also promotes user-centric design, ensuring that assistive technologies are tailored to diverse needs across different types of disabilities.
The initiative encourages public–private partnerships and collaboration with academic and research institutions to accelerate innovation. Integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable devices is expected to enhance the functionality and effectiveness of assistive solutions. Capacity building of service providers and awareness generation among beneficiaries form an integral part of the mission.
The mission aligns with India’s commitments under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and international obligations such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It also complements broader digital inclusion and welfare delivery initiatives.
Significance
The National Mission on Assistive Technologies advances inclusivity and dignity for persons with disabilities. By combining innovation with welfare objectives, it strengthens social justice, promotes independent living, and fosters a more equitable and accessible society.
