In a speech spanning economy, security and self-reliance, Modi warns of a “demographic conspiracy”, pledges a national defense shield, and vows to guard farmers against foreign trade pressures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address on August 15 was part political gauntlet, part policy blueprint — and all signal. From warning of a “well-thought-out conspiracy” to alter India’s demography, to unveiling plans for a sweeping national defence shield, Modi used the ramparts of the Red Fort to blend hardline security messaging with electoral promises and ideological affirmation.
For the first time in his 12 I-Day speeches, the PM offered unreserved praise for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh — the ideological fountainhead of the BJP — calling its century-long journey “a proud and glorious page in the nation’s history”.

On security, Modi announced a “high-powered demographic mission” to combat illegal infiltration, linking it to national unity and women’s safety. “These infiltrators snatch the livelihoods of our youth… target our sisters and daughters… occupy tribal lands. The country will not tolerate this,” he declared.
The PM also pledged to roll out GST rate cuts — timed for Diwali — promising “a big gift” to ease the tax burden on essentials and boost MSMEs. On trade, without naming the US or its steep new tariffs on Indian goods, Modi vowed to stand “like a wall” against any policy harming farmers, fisherfolk or cattle-rearers.
Security featured heavily, with Modi revealing plans for a nationwide “defense shield” by 2035, protecting strategic and civilian hubs — from hospitals to railway stations — backed by indigenous technology. He likened the system to Lord Krishna’s mythic Sudarshan Chakra, promising it would neutralize and retaliate against threats with greater force.
The speech underscored self-reliance, with Modi announcing that the first Made-in-India semiconductor chips would be in the market by year’s end, lamenting that the idea was “killed in the womb” six decades ago. He urged shopkeepers to display swadeshi signs and called for innovation in AI, cybersecurity, deep-tech and nuclear energy.
Politically, Modi hit out at the Congress over the Emergency, accusing it of “murdering” the Constitution, while dismissing Opposition narratives on Hindi imposition and OBC representation. The RSS praise, coming as the Sangh approaches its centenary and amid the delay in selecting a new BJP president, was seen as both homage and a message to his own cadre.
From infiltration crackdowns to economic sweeteners and ideological positioning, Modi’s Red Fort address was both a roadmap and a rallying cry — pitched to voters, opponents and the BJP’s own grassroots in equal measure.
