Following sporadic violence during the Durga Puja idol immersion procession, Cuttack district authorities have imposed an internet and social media blackout to prevent misinformation and restore peace across the city.

The city of Cuttack has been placed on high alert after fresh communal violence erupted following clashes during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession.
In an effort to prevent further escalation, the Odisha government ordered a 24-hour suspension of internet and social media services, beginning 7 pm on Oct 5, covering the Cuttack Municipal Corporation area, Cuttack Development Authority, and 42 adjoining Mauza regions.

Authorities have also imposed a 36-hour curfew across 13 police station areas in response to renewed disturbances.
Reports indicate that at least 25 people were injured in clashes, including police personnel, in the Dargha Bazaar and Gourishankar Park localities.
According to local media and police sources, the violence began during the immersion procession when a group objected to loud music being played late at night. The disagreement escalated into stone-pelting, injuries, and some property damage.
Shops were vandalized and CCTV cameras along the route reportedly damaged.
Law enforcement has greatly increased its presence in sensitive zones, with flag marches and deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to restore order. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been issued to prohibit public gatherings.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi appealed to residents to maintain peace, stating that any individual involved in disruptive acts would be held accountable.
In a statement, the Home Department cited the need to prevent the spread of provocative messages on social media, which could inflame sentiments further, as a reason for the internet suspension.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Police has convened with senior officers to monitor the situation and coordinate response measures.
Political reactions have followed — the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday, alleging administrative failure in controlling the situation.
Opposition parties have expressed concern over the severity of the response and cautioned against further escalation.
As of now, no fatalities have been officially confirmed. Authorities continue investigations to identify those responsible and have promised swift legal action.
