PM Modi ‘deeply appreciates’ and ‘fully reciprocates’ trump’s ‘always friends’ remark amid tariff tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded positively on Sep 6 to remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had called Modi a “great prime minister” and said they would “always be friends,” despite current policy disagreements.

Prime Minister Modi stated that he “deeply appreciates” Trump's sentiments and “fully reciprocates” them. He also described India and the United States as having a “very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.” These comments were shared via Modi’s post on X.

This response comes amid heightened tension in diplomatic and trade ties, particularly over the imposition of steep tariffs by the US on Indian goods. Trump had earlier criticized India’s continued purchase of Russian oil and subsequently imposed a 50% tariff, comprising an initial 25% reciprocal charge followed by an additional 25% as punishment which led to strains between New Delhi and Washington.

Trump’s conciliatory tone marked a shift from earlier, more critical remarks, including posting on Truth Social that “we lost India and Russia to darkest China,” and questioning India’s decisions on energy and geopolitics; yet, during his Oval Office remarks he reiterated that he “gets along very well” with Modi and described their relationship as “special,” despite current disagreements.

Modi’s measured response underscores the resilience of the bilateral relationship, even as it navigates friction. By emphasizing mutual friendship, Modi reaffirmed the importance of maintaining diplomatic and strategic continuity.

He highlighted the long-term, forward-looking nature of India-US relations, reaffirming his readiness to continue cooperation despite policy differences.
