In a phone conversation, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Putin for sharing details of his Alaska meeting with Donald Trump, while reaffirming India’s support for diplomacy and peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug 18, during which he thanked the Russian leader for sharing insights into his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska.
The call came shortly after the two leaders met in Anchorage on Aug 15, in what was billed as a significant diplomatic effort to explore a pathway toward ending the war in Ukraine.

In a post on X, Modi described Putin as “my friend” and expressed appreciation for the briefing. “India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to continuing our conversations,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed the call, reiterating India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable ways to resolve the ongoing conflict.
According to official statements, the leaders reviewed recent global developments, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Modi reaffirmed India’s long-standing stance that the conflict must be resolved through dialogue, noting that “this is not an era of war.”
He conveyed New Delhi’s readiness to support peace-building measures that uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The exchange comes days after India welcomed the Trump–Putin summit in Alaska, calling it a “positive step” in efforts to end the hostilities.
India has maintained that it seeks to balance its ties with Russia, a longstanding strategic partner, while also engaging closely with the United States and Europe on issues of global concern.
While no further details of the conversation were disclosed, diplomatic observers note that India has consistently positioned itself as a country advocating dialogue between conflicting sides, avoiding alignment with military blocs while emphasizing humanitarian assistance and global stability.
