Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said relations with China are gradually returning to normal after the border tensions eased at the SCO summit, and confirmed that India remains in active, ongoing discussions with the United States for a fair, mutually beneficial trade deal.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India–China relations are gradually moving towards normalcy as recent border de-escalation takes effect.
Speaking at an industry event, Goyal referred to earlier disruptions such as the 2020 Galwan skirmish, describing the renewed calm as a “natural consequence” of resolving those tensions.

He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had committed at the SCO summit to work toward a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable” border solution and to expand trade and investment ties.
At the same forum, Goyal addressed ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, affirming that talks have been underway since March and are still in progress. He emphasized that any agreement must be fair and beneficial to both sides, and explicitly rejected being bound by artificial deadlines.
Goyal also noted that discussions with the European Union are in advanced stages, with Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal actively involved in talks in Brussels ahead of the upcoming 13th negotiation round on Sep 8.
India’s diplomatic strategy appears to be one of pragmatic multilateral engagement, pursuing normalized ties with China, bilateral trade progress with the US, and continued talks with the EU—reflecting a diversified trade and diplomatic outreach.
