White House trade adviser Peter Navarro linked India’s Brahmin community to profiteering from discounted Russian oil while defending the U.S. decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports, sparking criticism from Indian politicians.

Peter Navarro, White House trade adviser under President Donald Trump, made remarks linking India’s Brahmin community to alleged profiteering from discounted Russian crude oil while justifying the US decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods.
Navarro, during an interview with Fox News, stated that India continues to purchase discounted Russian crude oil and that the profits from refining and selling it at higher prices are being realized by members of the Brahmin community.

He linked these profits to support for Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine, framing this as one reason for the US imposing higher tariffs on Indian goods.
Navarro also referred to India as the "Maharaja of tariffs," criticizing the country's import duties on US goods while maintaining trade practices that benefit Indian interests in international markets. He described these trade practices as protectionist and suggested that they undermine US economic interests.
Several Indian politicians responded to Navarro’s statements. Congress leader Pawan Khera said that such remarks are baseless and should not be made without evidence.
Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose noted that the term “Brahmin” is often associated with social and economic elites, highlighting the sensitive nature of Navarro’s comments. Economist Sanjeev Sanyal remarked on the portrayal of India within US policy narratives.
The 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Indian goods was defended by Navarro as a measure responding to India’s trade policies, particularly its continuing purchases of discounted Russian crude.
Navarro explicitly cited these purchases as contributing to profits that, according to him, support Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Navarro’s statements have been reported widely and have sparked discussions regarding trade relations between the United States and India, including the economic implications of tariffs and procurement of Russian oil.
