UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, daughter among the dead after Bayesian superyacht capsized in Italy

A superyacht sank off the Sicilian coast in the Mediterranean after which five bodies were retrieved on Aug 21 including that of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

The bodies were reportedly found by divers searching for those missing from inside the sunken yacht. The Bayesian superyacht is said to be lying on its side on the sea bed at a depth of 50 meters.

Earlier, one person, reported to be the chef from the yacht, was confirmed dead on Aug 19 which takes the total death toll to six.

The 56-meter-long (184 feet) British-flagged yacht, called the Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 10 crew members, an Italian coastguard said.

The yacht capsized on Aug 19 at about 5 am local time (03:00 GMT) after it was hit by stormy weather caused by a “waterspout” which is like a mini tornado, according to Italian authorities, as reported by Al-Jazeera.

Lynch was said to be celebrating his acquittal in a fraud trial in the United States in June. Meanwhile, his co-defendant in the trial, Steve Chamberlain, who was also acquitted in June, was killed after being hit by a car on Aug 17.

Lynch’s wife is among 15 people who have been rescued. While eight of those who were rescued have been hospitalized, others are said to be in stable condition, an Italian news agency Adnkronos reported.

Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are trying to figure out why the yacht sank within minutes and whether the captain and crew took all the necessary safety protocols to avert the tragedy.
