New initiatives promote drought-resistant crops and improved irrigation practices to safeguard farmers from climate change impacts

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has launched a National Mission on Climate-Resilient Agriculture aimed at strengthening farming practices in the face of increasing climate challenges. The initiative seeks to support farmers by promoting sustainable agricultural techniques and improving resilience against extreme weather conditions.
As part of the mission, the government plans to encourage the adoption of drought-resistant crop varieties that can withstand water scarcity and unpredictable rainfall patterns. Agricultural research institutions will also focus on developing improved seeds and farming technologies suited to changing climatic conditions.

The programme further emphasizes better irrigation management and soil health initiatives. Measures such as efficient water-use technologies, improved irrigation systems, and soil conservation practices are expected to enhance agricultural productivity while preserving natural resources.
The mission is expected to play a crucial role in improving food security in India. By strengthening climate-resilient farming systems, it aims to reduce the vulnerability of farmers to climate change and ensure sustainable agricultural growth in the long term.
