Major public health initiative aims to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer and strengthen preventive healthcare

The Government of India has launched a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive to prevent cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. The campaign, launched under the leadership of Narendra Modi, focuses on expanding access to preventive healthcare and improving women’s health outcomes across the country.
The vaccination programme primarily targets adolescent girls around the age of 14 years, as early immunisation provides the most effective protection against HPV infection. HPV is a common viral infection that can lead to cervical cancer if not prevented or treated early. By vaccinating girls before exposure to the virus, the programme aims to significantly reduce future cancer risks.

The initiative is part of the expansion of India’s national immunisation efforts, which aim to include more vaccines for preventing life-threatening diseases. The government is implementing the programme through schools, healthcare centres, and public health institutions to ensure widespread coverage, especially in rural and underserved areas.
This vaccination drive is significant for improving public health and reducing the long-term burden of cervical cancer. Preventive vaccination helps reduce healthcare costs, improves quality of life, and lowers mortality rates associated with cancer.
The programme also reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system and promoting preventive medicine. It supports national goals related to women’s health, gender equality, and universal healthcare access.
Overall, the nationwide HPV vaccination drive represents a major step in protecting future generations from cervical cancer and advancing India’s public health and development objectives.
