India’s advanced gravitational wave observatory in Hingoli marks a major milestone in global scientific research and strengthens the country’s role in space and fundamental physics

Construction of India’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has officially begun in Hingoli district of Maharashtra, marking a historic step in India’s scientific and space research capabilities. The project, implemented with international collaboration and domestic industrial support, aims to detect gravitational waves—ripples in space-time caused by massive cosmic events such as black hole mergers and neutron star collisions.
The LIGO-India project has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro, one of India’s leading engineering and infrastructure companies. The observatory will include highly sensitive laser interferometers capable of detecting extremely small disturbances in space-time, helping scientists better understand the structure and origin of the universe.

This facility will be part of the global network of gravitational wave observatories, complementing similar facilities in the United States and Europe. The project will enhance India’s participation in cutting-edge global scientific research and improve its capabilities in precision engineering, optics, and space science.
The observatory is expected to promote scientific research, technological development, and skill enhancement in advanced physics and engineering fields. It will also create employment opportunities and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in scientific innovation.
The LIGO-India project represents a major milestone in advancing India’s space and scientific capabilities, contributing to fundamental discoveries about the universe while supporting the country’s long-term technological and research ambitions.
