Iran fires missiles at Gulf states hosting US military assets, with explosions reported in Abu Dhabi and interceptions in Qatar, marking a sharp escalation after joint US-Israel strikes on Iranian targets.

Iran launched missile attacks against several Gulf Arab states in retaliation for the joint United States and Israel attacks on Iran earlier on Feb 28, with explosions reported across the region and air defences activated in multiple countries, according to official statements and eyewitness reports.
Explosions were heard in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, while air defence systems in Qatar intercepted Iranian surface-to-air or ballistic missiles, authorities said. Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh and Kuwait also reported loud blasts and activated air defence systems.

Iranian missiles reportedly targeted several states that host US military assets. Bahrain said that a missile attack struck the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Manama, while Qatar’s defence ministry said its forces “thwarted” multiple attacks, intercepting incoming missiles before any could reach populated areas.
The UAE said its air defence forces also intercepted Iranian missiles, and temporarily closed its airspace as a safety precaution.
At least one person was killed in Abu Dhabi after interceptor debris fell in residential areas, according to Gulf state media. Explosions and interceptor fire were also reported in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, although detailed casualty figures were not immediately available.
The strikes come hours after coordinated military action by the United States and Israel on targets inside Iran. That offensive triggered a swift Iranian response, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announcing it had struck US and Israeli military targets across the Middle East and saying the operation would continue until the “enemy is decisively defeated.”
Several Gulf states closed their airspace as the situation escalated, and robust air defence systems, including Patriot missiles, were deployed to intercept incoming threats. The al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a key United States Central Command hub, was among installations that came under attack but was defended successfully according to official statements.
The missile strikes and resulting explosions have drawn condemnation from several governments. The UAE described the Iranian attacks as a violation of its sovereignty and international law, stating it reserves its right to respond.
Qatar similarly condemned the attacks on its territory, and Kuwait said its air defences engaged missile threats over its airspace. Saudi Arabia strongly criticized the assaults on Gulf states hosting US forces, warning of broader implications for regional stability.
