India celebrates scientific achievements and promotes innovation with focus on women’s participation in science

India observes National Science Day every year on 28 February to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by renowned Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman in 1928. This groundbreaking discovery explained how light changes its wavelength when passing through a transparent medium, laying the foundation for advancements in spectroscopy and material science. In recognition of this contribution, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, becoming the first Indian to receive the honour in science.
National Science Day is celebrated across schools, universities, and scientific institutions to promote scientific awareness, innovation, and research. Various activities such as seminars, exhibitions, science fairs, and public lectures are organized to encourage students and researchers to engage with scientific developments.

The theme for National Science Day 2026, “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat,” highlights the importance of women’s participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The theme emphasizes gender inclusion and recognizes the contributions of women scientists in national development and technological progress.
The celebration promotes scientific temper, which is a fundamental duty under Article 51A of the Constitution. Encouraging scientific thinking and innovation is essential for addressing national challenges and supporting economic and technological advancement.
National Science Day is significant for inspiring young minds to pursue careers in science and research. It also strengthens India’s scientific ecosystem and supports its vision of becoming a global leader in science and technology.
Overall, the day honours India’s scientific legacy while encouraging innovation, inclusion, and scientific excellence for national development.
