A 21-year-old Indian-American student was among three people killed in a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, as investigators examine the suspect’s clothing bearing religious text and an Iran-style flag design for possible ideological motives.

A 21-year-old Indian-American student was among three people killed in a mass shooting in Austin, prompting a federal investigation into whether the attack was ideologically motivated.
The victim, Savitha Shan, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, was fatally shot during the incident that unfolded in the city’s entertainment district. Authorities confirmed that two others also died in the attack, while several people sustained injuries.

Police identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, 53, who was shot and killed by responding officers at the scene. According to investigators, Diagne was wearing clothing that included the phrase “Property of Allah” and a design resembling the Iranian national flag. Reports said an Iranian flag and related material were later recovered from his residence.
The developments have led the Federal Bureau of Investigation to join the probe. Officials said there are indicators that require examination of a possible terrorism angle, though no formal designation has been made so far. Authorities have not confirmed any direct operational links between the suspect and foreign extremist groups.
Savitha Shan was described by members of the university community as a bright and accomplished student. She was reportedly pursuing studies in management and economics and was expected to graduate soon. Her death has sparked grief among students and faculty, with tributes pouring in from classmates and Indian-American community members.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to interview witnesses, review surveillance footage, and analyse digital evidence to determine the motive behind the shooting. Officials have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the US, though investigators have cautioned against drawing conclusions until all facts are verified.
