A Sri Lankan lawmaker has warned that the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by a US submarine near Sri Lanka highlights how the Iran-US conflict is expanding into the Indian Ocean and could have implications for India’s security environment.

The sinking of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena near Sri Lanka has raised concerns about the widening impact of the ongoing Iran-US conflict in the Indian Ocean region, with a Sri Lankan parliamentarian warning that the incident could also have security implications for India.
Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa said the episode reflects how the conflict involving Iran is beginning to affect the wider Indian Ocean region. He noted that the maritime zone near Sri Lanka is strategically important and developments there could influence regional security dynamics, including those affecting India.

The Iranian warship was reportedly sunk by a US submarine in international waters off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, roughly 40 nautical miles from the port city of Galle. The attack occurred amid escalating hostilities between Iran and the US.
According to reports, the frigate had around 180 personnel onboard when it issued a distress call early on March 4 before sinking. Sri Lankan authorities launched a rescue operation, recovering bodies and rescuing several survivors from the sea.
The incident has drawn international attention because it significantly expands the geographical scope of tensions beyond the Gulf region and into the Indian Ocean, a critical maritime route for global trade and energy shipments. Analysts say increased military activity in these waters could raise strategic concerns for countries in the region, including India.
The IRIS Dena had reportedly taken part in a multinational naval exercise hosted by India shortly before the incident and was returning from the region when it was attacked.
The sinking of the warship underscores the risks of the Iran-US confrontation spilling into key international sea lanes, potentially affecting maritime security, regional stability and shipping routes across the Indian Ocean.
